Australian Education?

The education in Australia can be divided into pre-school education and the other three-tier model which consist of primary education, secondary education and tertiary education.
Pre-School Education

Children enter pre-school at the age of 3 to 4. But pre-school education (also known as kindergarten) is not compulsory for all children in Australia. So some parents may send their children to day care or parent-run playgroup. Some pre-schools are separated from primary schools except for Western Australia and Queensland where pre-school education is taught as part of primary school education.

Some pre-schools in Australia are run by State and Territory Governments, while some, in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales are run by local councils, community groups or private organizations.

The Australia education system had implemented a system of play-based learning, early literacy, numeracy skills and social development to prepare children to go into higher levels.

Primary and Secondary School Education

The number of years in studying in primary and secondary schools varies from different territories. Primary schools in some places like New South Wales and Tasmania require 6 years while some like South Australia and Queensland is require 7, while students need to attend 6 years of secondary school. All together, it is 12 or 13 years. Teachers in schools provide interactive teachings among students and teachers so that this will develop their self confidence.

Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will participate in tests in May each year. After that, parents are provided with their children’s results and performance against the national standards, national achievement level and national mean. Teachers and parents are also free to share ideas according to the students needs.

Tertiary and Further Education
There are two types of education programs here: one is the Vocational Education Training (VET) offered by institutions and industry sector; while the other is from universities.

Vocational Education Training (VET)
- delivers practical and career-orientated training.
- provides training for over 1.6 million Australians.
- VET students gain high quality qualifications which are nationally recognized.

Australian Universities
- offer programs from bachelor to postgraduate degrees and higher degrees.
- have reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

  2. We can only dream of that, but I still remember this kind of play-based teachings when I was in kindergarden. After that, its so Exam orientated learning style which produce uncivic consious citizens. I think most of us can be placed under this category.

  3. VET vs Universities, which is the best? Is VET really recongnised by the other institutions and most importantly by the employer. We also have polytechnics, MARA vocational collges, SMT but as we all know it was not recongnised by all the employer and the graduates from academic institutions get job opportunities much much easier than this technical institutions students. So we should also learn from this aspect from Australia.
